Dr. Farooq Abdullah calls upon Hospitality Industry to develop and implement renewable energy




Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy has said that hospitality industry is one of the major potential areas for development & implementation of Renewable Energy at an Interactive Session on Maximizing Renewable Energy Integration in the Hospitality Sector organized by Confederation of Indian Industry in Jaipur on the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas, he said that that this is the time to be proactive on the growth, development and implementation of Renewable Energy setups on large scale in our heritage hotels, hospitals and other major hotels. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt of India and Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd (IREDA) supported the initiative.

Dr Abdullah mentioned that India faces a formidable challenge in meeting its energy needs and providing adequate and affordable energy to all sections of society in a sustainable manner. The country today faces an energy demand supply gap of 8% with peak shortages to an order of 11-12%. The Hospitality industry is one of the major energy and water intensive sectors and to deal with the situation, we will have to maximize the utilisation of renewable energy sources for meeting our energy demands, he further added.

He also assured that Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and State Government will certainly put their best efforts for the growth of Renewable Energy sector. He also quoted examples of many foreign countries who are being benefited by adoption of Renewable Energy devices.

Earlier Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister for Energy, Government of Rajasthan expressed his concern about the subject and requested the Union Minister for supporting Rajasthan in development of Renewable Energy setups in Rajasthan. He also assured full support & proactiveness of Rajasthan Government for the initiative. He also emphasized on starting the initiative with Government and requested the participants to start using renewable energy sources in their Hotels, Hostels, Colleges and Buildings.

Shri Deepak Gupta, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, informed that the use of Renewable Energy has already been started with the Government buildings and all the upcoming new Government buildings and PSUs will be properly equipped with energy efficient devices. He also replied to a no. of queries raised by participants during the open house.

Shri Deepak Puri, Dy Chairman, CII Northern Region and Chairman Managing Director of Moser Baer India Ltd added that it is widely considered that hospitality industry is energy and water intensive. In the coming years, the sector has high potential for growth; consequently energy and water consumption by the sector may increase substantially. Therefore, it is imperative to focus on various possibilities by which renewable energy usage can be maximized in the hospitality sector.

Dr Ashvini Kumar, Director Solar Thermal, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, GoI gave a presentation on Renewable Energy Applications and it’s technology aspects. In context of hotel industry, he added, that some of the possible applications of solar energy include Solar hot water systems for heating water for room, swimming pools, laundry, Solar steam cooking systems, Solar lighting systems and Solar Air conditioning.

Shri Kishore Khaitan, Chairman, CII Rajasthan welcomed the guests, delegates and speakers at the programme.

Shri Debashish Majumdar, CMD, IREDA Ltd in his concluding remarks mentioned about various initiatives being taken by IREDA in coming days to maximize use of Renewable Energy.

There were around 40 participants from the hospitality industry.
