Kolkata, India — A massive initiative to generate solar energy is heating up in the Indian state of Gujarat, which could make it the country’s hub for solar power.

In the state’s Rann of Kutch – an 11,000-square-mile area of inhospitable, barren, saline and clay-clad terrain – the only visible gleam is a mirage. But soon, giant solar panels will dot 1,500 hectares of the Banaskantha district, a small part of the sun-baked region where daytime temperatures normally soar to 110 degrees F (43 degrees C), to generate electricity.

The Clinton Climate Initiative, a programme of the William J Clinton Foundation, is in the process of setting up four ‘solar parks’ across the world with an overall capacity of 20,000 Mw. India, which hopes to attract $16 billion in renewable energy investments by 2012, will soon announce new policies to cut the cost of investment in the green sector, the chief of India’s renewables agency said on Thursday. Proposals include financial incentive models linked to units of green power generated and tax cuts based on accelerated depreciation benefits.
